We love you guys! Jaden, you're so lucky having wonderful parents who will use ASL with you!!! -Cheryl in Massachusetts, Deaf parent of 2 hearing/ASL fluent children.
"Other related professionals"..oh my god..I can't believe that Mendoza did not know who they were.
And the State of California is not funding this while voting on whether to make it a law? I know the state of CA is broke, but that's simply unheard of.
This bill needs to die or be adjusted/amended.
One good thing...we have the Internet these days...thank god for that at least.
Thank you for bringing out the truth of what happened behind the scenes. It is not necessary to keep the parents of Deaf children in the dark from a significant factor which is having the right to acquire a natural language, ASL, that that affects the lifetime of their Deaf child.
Your testimony is crucial that makes an impact to help other new parents to see the light. Thank you for taking the time once again.
But the first point of contact is, and always will be an audiologist. They are the professional who confirms that the child has a hearing loss.
My second point is language. Yes, language is the key. There are two language choices for a deaf child in the US. They are English and ASL. Both are true, full languages, and both have uses in a deaf child's life. I just attended a conference for parents of deaf children here. It was put on by an oral deaf school. My daughter was by far the most delayed child there. These kids are doing great. They have language, and they speak and understand. They are THRIVING using spoken language.
I am sorry that your son went through so much. I am sorry that he was not able to access spoken language through his CI, and that he suffered because of it. I am sorry that he needed ASL and he didn't get it. But, in my experience, that is not usually the case. Most children with CI's hear very well, and are caught up to age appropriate levels by 3 years post activation. (Especially if they are implanted by age 18 months). It is a whole new world out there.
My concern is that if this bill is NOT passed parents will continue to NOT get unbiased information. They need to know that they have choices and they need to know what the options are.
I would love to hear how someone who is against the bill would fix this. What should the bill say?
I'm a mom, above all else, to two precious boys. Ty, my eldest, is 15 years old and a freshman in high school. He is Hearing. Jaden, my youngest, is 12 years old and in 6th grade. He is Deaf.
I'm so grateful for where we are now but will never forget our ride through it all. This blog is to share our struggles and triumphs, our road to discovery, and our lives now as a Hearing/Deaf family. This is Jaden's story, my story, our story...thru this mom's eyes.
